Kimberly’s Fine Jewelry
Vail may have bear-proof bins, but nothing will keep a Golden Bear away. The beautifully shaped bear, designed by original owner Lee Kirch, has become the symbol of Vail. An entire jewelry store and catalogue business grew up around the piece, which comes in baby, mama and papa bear sizes and a myriad of jewelry options: necklaces, bracelets, belts and more. “We have a studio here in Vail where a lot of our jewelry is made,” said Nikki Chase, creative director for the store. “It’s become a symbol of Vail. It’s a design that’s simple and classic, so it’s never gone out of style.” In addition to jewelry, the store carries a nice range of fun clothes. Plus, there are three strategically-placed chairs for weary husbands to sink into while their wives take a nice, long look around.
The Squash Blossom has bloomed. Not simply a good jewelry shop, it’s also an exciting one. Representing artists from around the globe, the selection includes works by artists as far flung as Italy and Asia, or as close to home as Vail. Gurhan’s seductive gold, Alex Sepkus’ Byzantine glitter and KJ Designs’ siren songs of balance all help make up a jewelry store that’s greater than the sum of its parts. There really is a Kimberly of Kimberly’s Fine Jewelry, and she’s there more than she not. “We’re all about taking care of our customers,” said Kimberly Nichols. “We have all different kinds of jewelry lines, from high-end costume to high-end jewelry.” That variety appeals to a wide range of local budgets. Nichols has worked in jewelry since high school, but when she and her partner, Dennis O’Halloran, opened Kimberly’s it was the first time she got to be the boss. Her custom work is a top seller, and she was going green long before it was trendy ” her favorite gemstone is green tourmaline, and she has some in the case right now.
