Best Local Team
Battle Mountain volleyball has become a rite of fall. Brian Doyon’s team has gone to state three consecutive years, and won the whole shooting match in 2006. Perhaps more impressive, the Huskies followed up their trip to the Den Colliseum in 2006 with another league title and another run to the Elite 8 last November.
Vail Mountain School’s Dan Weiland has become a force on the state level despite the school’s small numbers. The Gore Rangers come out for the sport en masse, producing some of the best cross-country skiers in the state. Karlie Moore medaled at state on home snow at last year’s state meet. Senior Chris Woods already has won the coveted Skimeister Award as the state’s best all-around skier and younger brother Sean Woods is a contender this year as a sophomore.
The thundering herd of Battle Mountain runners gathers each day outside school at 3:45. Their sport is most sports’ punishment and the Huskies are building a dynasty. In 2005 the girls team won the state title and the boys followed the next 2 years with state crowns of their own. This year’s state performance in Colorado Springs was sheer domination with the Huskies scoring half as many points as the second place team (lower’s better).
