‘Best of West’ theme for Mountains of Hope dinner

VAIL – Pre-kindergarten children throughout Eagle County will be the real beneficiaries Friday evening, as the annual Mountains of Hope benefit dinner and auction will generate funds for the Vail Valley Foundation’s newest education initiative.Dubbed “Destination Discovery,” the program will fund and facilitate a fleet of mobile learning busses that will travel throughout Eagle County, providing pre-kindergarten-aged children with the opportunity to discover the wonders of learning about their world, encouraging creative expression and nurturing natural curiosity.”Research into school success shows a direct link to the preparation that young children receive form the time they are born until they enter kindergarten,” said Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. “Young children who have the opportunity to engage in stimulating cognitive activities and nurturing social-emotional relationships are already ahead of their peers when they enter kindergarten.”Presented by A.E. Betteridge and held in conjunction with the 2006 Countrywide American Ski Classic at the Vail Marriott Resort and Spa, this years Mountain of Hope evening will feature a “Best of the West” theme, getting under way at 7 p.m. The evening activities will include silent, sealed bid and live auction items, along with cocktails and buffet dinner, celebrity boot shining competition, a special performance by country star Steve Azar and line dancing to the sounds of Heather and the Blacksmiths.Auction items will include the autographed hood of NASCAR legend Bill Elliott’s race car, a steel and gold Cartier Roadster chronograph watch, a week at the plush Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas and specially written, personalized and recorded song for the lucky bidder from Azar.Additional games of chance will include the chance to try and pick out a $5,000, one karat diamond from a margarita glass filled with cubic zirkonium and an opportunity to guess the karat weight of a piece of antique jewelry.A limited amount of tickets for Mountains of Hope are available for $150 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the Destination Discovery program.
