Big Air organizers bring out snow guns for Civic Center ramp

Even if warm weather returns, organizers say the Big Air ramp in the middle of Denver’s Civic Center will be covered in snow when the skiing and snowboarding event starts Tuesday.
Organizers have four snow guns and workers from Copper Mountain ski resort to cover the 60,000- square-foot ramp with snow.
“These guys are the best in the business,” said Kevin O’Grady, the key event organizer with Populous Design Firm, which is taking care of the ramp. “If the weather is accommodating, which it looks like it will be, we will be done in two nights.”
Just as natural snow began to fall around them, workers tested the machines Wednesday and planned to deploy them overnight to begin covering the landing area of the ramp, which will be 16 to 24 inches deep. Organizers plan to bring in cranes Friday to lift the machines to the top of the 101-foot ramp, which will be covered in 6 to 10 inches of snow. The machines will typically run from 10 p.m to 10 a.m.
