VAIL, Colorado ” A winter-storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday for western Colorado from Vail to Steamboat Springs to south of Durango, the National Weather Service warns.

Beaver Creek reported 11 inches of snow overnight and Vail reported 10 inches.

A storm packing moist Pacific air is expected to wallop the region with heavy snow and 60 mph gusts this afternoon. Up to 20 more inches of snow could hit some areas, bringing the recent storm total to nearly three feet.

The grueling conditions “will make travel very hazardous or impossible,” a National Weather Service alert warns.

Delays are expected on Interstate 70 over Vail Pass because of avalanche-control blasting.

According to the National Weather Service more than a foot could fall on Vail Valley through Thursday night. Much colder air is forecast to move in Friday, with temperatures expected to fall below zero Saturday night.
