The first Bindu Beats and Brews celebratory event will gather community members for a day of physical and mental wellness. The event is set for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, in Minturn’s Maloit Park.

Bindu Beats and Brews raises funds for the Bindu Sky Memorial Fund, which preserves and honors the legacy of Bindu Pomeroy. Pomeroy, a Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy teacher, died in a snowboarding accident in East Vail in November 2018.

The memorial fund supports local student athletes pursuing their passion and brings community members together over events like the film night and spirit awards and the Bindu and Friends Rail Jam.

The yearly spring celebratory event for Bindu began as the Bindu 5K run, started by a Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy student in 2019. This will be the sixth year that students, staff, alumni, community members and friends and family of Bindu gather in Maloit Park to connect over a run.

This year’s event builds on and expands that legacy.

Reiner Schmidt and Cody Worrell, both seniors at Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy, made organizing and growing the Bindu Beats and Brews event their senior project this year.

“We wanted to continue that legacy that was built in 2019,” Schmidt said.

“(Bindu) was a great guy. We all knew him pretty well. He was a great teacher, and a lot of people respected him,” Worrell said. “It’s great to keep the legacy going.”

In the process of organizing Bindu Beats and Brews, the students faced the challenge of working on a budget and learned how to coordinate several moving parts into a cohesive, community-facing event.

“It has been a very good experience, learning how to organize events and contact people,” Schmidt said. “I think it’s a really good learning opportunity, especially for us, at our age, to teach us how to reach out to organizations, but also learn how to put on an event.”

“It’s hard to make an event that sustains 1,000 people on a small budget,” Worrell said.

This year’s event will include the original 5K, but add on a plethora of activities, including yoga, a cold plunge, a sauna, a DJ set and a live concert with local band The Runaway Grooms.

“We thought putting the concert in would bring more people and help create a lasting legacy for Bindu,” Schmidt said.

Worrell said he expects the event to draw over 1,000 people, including several Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy alumni. Following Friday’s Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy graduation ceremony, Schmidt and Worrell will join their ranks. But they will be onsite coordinating Bindu Beats and Brews, alongside their teacher, Sam Bennett, on Monday.

“We would love to have people come to the event and help continue Bindu’s legacy, along with supporting the community,” Schmidt said. “I think it’s going to be a great time. It’s going to be a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy the beginning of summer.”

Tickets to Bindu Beats and Brews range in price, from $20 to $100, based on what activities are included, from just the concert to all events plus beer and wine. Profits will go to the Bindu Sky Memorial Fund.

“All of our money just goes right back to the kids,” Worrell said.
