Bizwatch: Mr. Handyman, in Edwards
Vail, CO, Colorado
Business name: Mr. Handyman.
Location: Edwards, CO.
Owner: Brendan Bell.
Service manager: Scott Hansen.
Date opened: Late 2007.
What do you do?
(Bell): We provide professional handyman services. We do almost anything in home
maintenance and repair.
(Hansen): We’ll take care of what’s on most “honey-do” lists.
What makes your business stand out in the valley?
(Bell): We stress professional service. We wear uniforms, we drive company vans loaded with tools. We show up on time and do a great job. Then we clean up when we’re done.
What’s your professional background?
(Hansen): I have 32 years of experience in the construction business. I’ve been an architectural coordinator, a project manager and a supervisor for a general contractor.
(Bell): I’d been in property management for six years and saw that basic repair is something that everybody needs. That’s why no job is too small for us.
Why did you sign up with a franchised brand?
(Bell): The Mr. Handyman franchise has a proven business model. They have a celebrity spokesman (Richard Karn, who played Al Borland on the “Home Improvement” TV series) and a great network of support for franchisees.
What’s the biggest challenge you face in business today?
(Bell): It’s finding reliable, professional employees, and getting the word out about out business.
