As the summer shines on, so does the summer music lineup at State Bridge, the much-loved music spot by the Colorado River. In particular, State Bridge’s daytime event, Bluegrass and Bloodys, set for Sunday, features both Denver-based bluegrass band Cosmic Mesa and a Bloody Mary bar in tribute to the daytime show. The event is regularly one of the venue’s more popular summertime concerts and promises to be a family friendly attraction accompanied by riverside views and the sounds of bluegrass.
Concertgoer Andrew Pires, of Steamboat Springs, has gone to the show every year and says that the show is a summer favorite.
“It’s a great way to end a weekend of camping at Rancho Del Rio or a float trip. No better way to end a weekend than with a Bloody Mary and a side of bluegrass,” he said.
Getting to Know Cosmic Mesa
Currently based out of Denver, Cosmic Mesa got its start in Fort Collins, when guitarist Andrew DeCarlo and mandolinist Oren Paisner started putting together lyrics that catalyzed their future sound.

“We started writing a lot of material, and from there we knew we had to expand,” DeCarlo said.
Starting with DeCarlo and Paisner, who are both also vocalists for the group, the band absorbed Scott Vincent on upright bass and vocals, Joey Purmort on banjo and vocals, and noted Colorado fiddler and singer Nancy Steinberger to round out the group. Together, Cosmic Mesa was born, borrowing classic bluegrass derivatives and adding their own unique, celestial sound.
While the group is rooted in the foundations of folk and bluegrass, Cosmic Mesa’s particular niche is based upon their own twist to more traditional elements of the music.
“Nowadays, a lot of bands are mixing their own style into folk and traditional bluegrass,” DeCarlo said, “We define our style as cosmic Americana grass. The ‘Americana grass’ part of our style is embedded in our folk and bluegrass roots, but the ‘cosmic’ part is our own twist, where we extend jams and try to incorporate cosmically driven riffs that are our own unique sound.”
The group says it’s excited to play at the famed State Bridge venue but that they are especially looking forward to taking the stage in front of an energetic crowd for Sunday’s show.
“The bluegrass scene is a particularly friendly one; I think bluegrass shows are some of the few concerts where there are more musicians in the crowd than on the stage,” DeCarlo said.
Similarly, much of the attraction to folk music for the band is rooted in the approachability of the bluegrass community, he said.
“A big draw for so many bluegrass artists is that everyone just wants to play. It’s exciting to go to a bluegrass venue and see so many circles of people playing together and feeding off that energy from one another,” DeCarlo said.
The event at State Bridge will be an exciting milestone for Cosmic Mesa as the furthest west the band has ever played.
“A lot of our favorite bands have played at State Bridge, so the opportunity to perform there is a pretty exciting one for us,” DeCarlo said.
A summer favorite
Event organizers are similarly thrilled to bring back the Bluegrass and Bloodys event, as it has been a favorite for several years at the venue. Set during the afternoon, the show is a welcome offering for families looking to spend the day outside, and on the river. State Bridge will be sponsoring a Bloody Mary bar, where guests can purchase the signature drink for $7.
The show will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. State Bridge also offers overnight camping for those looking to enjoy a night on the river, and visitors can rent out yurts, cabins or teepees.
