Body found of man who fell into Colorado River
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – Recovery teams Monday found the body of a man who fell into the Colorado River near State Bridge. The man was identified as Sterling Prevost, 31, of Denver.
Prevost, who was camping in the area, fell into the river sometime between 8 and 9 a.m. the morning of June 19. There was one witness. Eagle County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said there was a delay of between 60 and 90 minutes between the time Prevost fell into the river and the fall was reported to authorities.
Asked about the delay, Cordingly said alcohol was the main factor.
“Someone who heard about it second-hand called 911,” Cordingly said.
While alcohol played a role, and people camping in the area were interviewed, no foul play is suspected in the indcident.
Once the call for help was made, authorities launched an intensive search of the river downstream from State Bridge. That search was called off about 8 p.m. Sunday and resumed early Monday morning. Prevost’s body was spotted by a helicopter from the Colorado National Guard’s High Altitude Aviation Training Site at about 9:45 a.m.
The body was found about 2 1/2 miles from where the man was last seen.
While National Guard and Vail Mountain Rescue recovered Prevost’s body, crews from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Vail Mountain Rescue, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Gypsum Fire Protection District, Rock Creek Fire, Salvation Army, Bureau of Land Management, TriState Care Flight, Summit County Dive Team the, Alpine Rescue Team and the Eagle County Ambulance District assisted with the operation.
Cordingly said while Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis will conduct an autopsy, the police investigation into the incident is essentially over.
