Bones continue to appear at Breckenridge burial site

BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado – Excavators continue to find human remains at a historic miners’ cemetery near the Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breckenridge.

Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said bones at the site – 700 Broken Lance, the Corral subdivision – are being collected to be turned over to her office and ultimately the town, for burial.

She said a former excavator at the site had pushed bones around the area 10 years ago, and additional bones have been found as crumbling sidewalks are dug up.

In June, an intact human skeleton was found in a coffin at the site. Richardson said the remains appear to be of an Asian man, and no clothing but two ceramic buttons were found.

The coffin was estimated to be from the mid- to late-1800s.

Richardson said she’s been out on many bone cases in Summit County this summer, but that most of the findings have been animal bones. The remains of a missing hiker were found in Officer’s Gulch in June.
