BookTrails starts local Reading and Ranches Camp
EDWARDS — BookTrails, a reading and writing enrichment program taught through the outdoors, will be holding a Reading on Ranches Camp in collaboration with The Bookworm of Edwards this summer. The camp will follow the curriculum and programs created by BookTrails at its primary Reading on Ranches Camp located in Steamboat Springs. The week-long day camps are structured around a common book and emphasize reading and writing skills along with outdoor exploration. All camps are held entirely on local ranches and boost hiking, nature identification and water play, along with literacy education. Reading on Ranches Camp in Edwards will operate primarily on the Kapsner Ranch and the Ingalls/Conlin Ranch, both located up Sweetwater Creek.
BookTrails will offer four of its most popular camps through The Bookworm of Edwards this summer: Little House on the Prairie Camp, Hatchet Camp, Camp Half-blood (from “The Lightning Thief” series) and American Girl Camp. Each camp runs Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with drop-off and pick-up at The Bookworm of Edwards. Some camps include a Thursday night overnight camp-out at one of the ranches. Camps are offered for ages 7-12, and schedule and costs can be found at http://www.mybooktrails.org. Scholarships are available through the BookTrails Scholarship Fund. BookTrails never turns away a child who wants to participate in Reading on Ranches Camp, regardless of their economic situation.
BookTrails was founded in 2011 by Emily Krall in partnership with her family’s Steamboat Springs bookstore, Off the Beaten Path Bookstore. Krall and her family aimed to inspire childhood literacy by designing programs that create new ways to experience the joys of reading and writing. BookTrails’ mission is to foster a love of literacy in all people and promote the importance for all children to have access to literacy programs.
“Our customers have been asking us for years about fun, summer camps for their little readers,” said Nicole Magistro, proprietor of The Bookworm of Edwards. “We are thrilled to partner with BookTrails to offer enrichment camps that combine great literature with outdoor adventures. This really fills a need, and we know kids and parents will be more than satisfied with the results when summer is over.”
