VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – There is no shortage of outdoor activities in the Vail Valley. We have hiking, cycling, fishing, swimming, floating. And, if you are looking for something to do after your tennis match and before dinner, cultural events abound as well. Nobody should miss the opportunity to attend a Bravo! performance, or one of the many enlightening events hosted by the Vail Symposium. The Bookworm of Edwards has an events schedule that includes visits from nationally recognized authors like Garth Stein and Lisa See, as well as community fundraiser events for local nonprofits. There is no shortage of happenings geared toward adults.

But, what about everyone else? What if you can’t or don’t want to get a babysitter? Aren’t there activities that the whole family can enjoy together? Well, there is now. The Bookworm is hosting a series of family activities to take place every Saturday at 4 p.m. throughout the month of August.

“We saw a need to offer a different kind of programming for our customers, especially this time of year when so many families are visiting the valley,” said Bookworm co-owner Nicole Magistro. “Families and kids are always welcome at The Bookworm, but this just gives them a little something extra to do while they are here.”

The Bookworm kicks off its “Family Fun in the Summertime!” series with a special storytime featuring Gore Range Natural Science School on Saturday. This isn’t the first time these two organizations have teamed up for kids programming. Last spring the science school participated in Bald Eagle Storytime at The Bookworm with games, activities, and stories.

“Partnering with the Bookworm to provide nature education is a great opportunity to awaken people to the natural world, and awakening wonder about the environment is the first step toward promoting environmental stewardship,” said Ann Stevenson, community programs director for GRNSS.

This week kids can learn all about bats and the role they play in our environment while reading “Bats at the Library,” by Brian Lies.

Each week The Bookworm will feature a different family friendly event on Saturday afternoon. Next week, local snowboarding legend Danny Martin visits for a pre-season snowboarding prep session. The author of “Play Chess like an Animal” will also make a Saturday appearance for some gaming fun. Then on Saturday, August 22, head to The Bookworm for a celebration in honor of the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” and a screening of the classic film based on the classic story by L. Frank Baum.
