MINTURN, Colorado – Local search and rescue teams spent more than three hours rescuing an 18-year-old man from the Cross Creek Trail near Tigiwon Road, just outside of Minturn.

The man was hiking with family members when he grabbed onto a boulder for support near a steep incline, said Shannon Cordingly, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. The 3-foot boulder fell on the man and his family members were able to free him from the rock, but he couldn’t walk out of the trail on his own, she said.

Vail Mountain Rescue, the Eagle River Fire Protection District, the Eagle County Ambulance District and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office all responded and got the man out of the forest around 4:30 p.m. Rescuers had to hike to the man, more than two miles up the trail, and carry him out, Cordingly said. The man was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Cordingly said.
