Boy killed in Hwy. 6 crash in New Castle

NEW CASTLE ” Authorities are seeking a witness to a fatal accident on Highway 6 outside of New Castle on Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred when a white Chevy Tahoe driven by a 16-year-old Rifle girl attempted to pass another westbound truck in a no-passing zone and went out of control, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The Tahoe wound up rolling down a steep embankment off the roadway and a 9-year-old boy in the back seat was ejected from the vehicle; he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said.
A passenger in the front seat, 18-year-old Alma Valencia of Washington was wearing a seatbelt, as was the driver. Valencia suffered minor injuries and was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, while the driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Grand River Medical Center in Rifle, according to the patrol.
Authorities are asking that the driver of a white van that was traveling east and was almost struck by the Tahoe contact the patrol. The driver of the van is considered a witness only and is not being blamed for the accident. The Glenwood Springs State Patrol office can be reached at 945-6198.
The patrol has not released the name of either the teenage driver or the passenger who was killed. Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the crash, the patrol said.
