I sat down at the computer and typed in “40 Days to…” in the search queue and Google pulled up over a billion results. You may wonder why there are so many 40 Days to… programs? It is generally believed that it takes 40 days to change a negative or limiting habit into a positive one. The process is not just about subtracting a habit, pattern or behavior that is not working, but also about adding back in something that truly serves you. Aside from the specific duration of the programs, what all have in common is their intention to help you create a better life for yourself.

So why do a program at all? Let me throw out some rough numbers to give you an idea of your chances for success. If you decide you want to change a habit all on your own, you have about a 30 percent chance of succeeding. If you tell a friend, your success rate doubles. If you ask a friend to hold you accountable, you now have about a 90 percent chance of creating real change in your life. The structure that a program provides in combination with a group dynamic creates a very powerful vehicle for change. Our not so great habits tend to have a hold on us, and a 40 Day program provides education, support and guidance to break the limits we have put on ourselves.

Having participated in the Vail Vitality Center’s 40 Days to Transformation program four times, I personally believe this program is a fantastic method for creating real shifts and changes in people’s lives. I have gained different insights into myself each time. This awareness has helped me to be more real, less judgmental, and much more interested in my relations and connections with others. I feel committed to living my best life – as this very well might be our only one – and helping others to do so as well. The program is a time proven process based on my teacher Baron Baptiste’s book “40 Days to Personal Revolution.” Baptiste lays out a daily plan of yoga, meditation, diet and self-inquiry work, which together create a healthy and mindful lifestyle. This is not the one and only way to create real change in your life, but it is a road map that points the way and has worked for thousands of participants worldwide.

Mahatma Ghandi said “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” If you find yourself not entirely happy with your life, your world, this program is designed to get you unstuck. The Vail Vitality Center’s 40 Days to Transformation program begins on Jan. 9, with an orientation meeting at 7:15 p.m. in the Yoga Studio at Vail Vitality Center.
