Breaking the ice with local sculptor
VAIL- The Vail Symposium’s Cultural Arts series presents a tour of local Scott Rella’s ice sculpture studio in Avon. An exclusive glimpse into this medium will include a live demonstration from ice block to art.
The field of ice sculpture is a small but global community. Rella, president of Fear No Ice Inc., a performance ice sculpting company, has been synonymous with ice sculpting for over 25 years. Rella was pursuing a culinary career at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel before branching out to start Ice Sculpture Designs, the largest and oldest ice sculpting company in New York. Since then, Rella and his partners have represented the United States in three Winter Olympics; competed in the World Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska; been featured on “Regis and Kathie Lee,” “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” They have toured for hundreds of promotions and have even used ice sculpture as the centerpiece for a theater production. Rella moved to the mountains about seven years ago and now runs Aspen Vail Ice.Attendees will learn how the ice is made, sculpted, finished and transported. Rella will show us tools of the trade, reveal the artistry behind his creations and demonstrate his craft.
Admission is $15 and includes light refreshments. Reservations are required. For reservations or for more information, call Vail Symposium at 476-0954 or visit http://www.vailsymposium.org.
