Breckenridge announces Pro-Am Freeride teams for ’06-’07

BRECKENRIDGE ” Breckenridge will play host to the world’s top snowboarders this week when the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix kicks off this Thursday.

Included within the ranks of the industry’s best are several members of the Breckenridge Freeride Team. As the event season starts Breckenridge Ski Resort would like to introduce the 2006-2007 Breckenridge Freeride Team. The Freeride Team members are Summit County’s most talented snowboarders, skiers and telemarkers many of whom are world-renowned in their field and are competing in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix.

Snowboarders

Chad Otterstrom: Otterstrom is a national standout that will be competing in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe and night exhibition events. Otterstrom was named 2005 Transworld Snowboarding Magazine’s Rider of the Year, took first place at the 2006 Cinquo de Pipo and second place at the 2005 Grand Prix Quarterpipe. Otterstrom’s secret talent: He can spin a pillow on his finger.

New! JJ Thomas: Thomas will be competing in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe and night exhibition events. Thomas took home the bronze medal in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, he was an X-Games gold medalist, took first place in the 2002 Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe event in Breckenridge and first in the 2005 Icer Air competition.

Steve Fisher: Fisher will be competing in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe and night exhibition events. Fisher is an X Games gold medalist, took first at the 2005 Saas Fee World Cup and second at the 2005 U.S. Open. Fisher’s secret talent: He’s a good hockey player.

Mike Casanova: Casanova is not only well known here in the United States, but on the international scene as well. Casanova took first place at the Vans Cup, first place at The McDonald’s Empire Shakedown in Canada, and first place at the Red Bull London Rail Jam, just to name a few.

Ryan Thompson: Thompson likes to take his skills to the big screen and to the judges. He regularly spends his time starring in the top snowboarding movies, such as People by Mack Dawg Productions, When in Doubt Lay it Out by Role Model Productions and Some Kinda Life by Neoproto Films. He also placed 3rd in the Nippon Open Rail contest.

New! Jonas Michilot: Michilot has been featured in many industry publications and films, such as Never Felt Better, by Autumn Line Cinema. Michilot took fifth in The Dew Action Sports Tour, and first in Bonfire’s Pipe-to-Pipe event.

Leslie Glenn: Glenn will be competing in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe and is an alternate for the night exhibition event. Glenn placed second in the 2006 Aspen Open, seventh in the 2006 World Superpipe Championships along with several top ten finishes. Glenn has been on numerous television shows, and featured in many industry publications.

JJ Johnson: An industry veteran and role model for snowboarding’s future stars, Johnson has been in several major industry publications and films, such as Warren Miller’s Higher Ground and When in Doubt Lay it Out, by Role Model Productions.

Josh Sherman: Sherman will be an alternate in the Chevrolet Grand Prix’s night exhibition event. Sherman was featured on the cover of the 06-07 Transworld Snowboarding Magazine Buyer’s guide and has been photographed by major industry publications.

Gabi Viteri: Viteri placed second in the 2005 Spring Massive Slopestyle event. Her plans for this season include competing in the U.S. Open and The Honda Session. Viteri has been featured in Who is…, by More or Less Productions, as well as many industry publications.

Tori Koski: Koski will be competing along side a hand-full of women in this year’s Chevrolet Grand Prix Halfpipe and night exhibition events. Koski has appeared in the Palmer Snowboards shop video and several industry publications.

Skiers

New! Matt Philippi: Philippi placed first in the 2006 American Freeski Tour in Breckenridge, first in the 2006 Aspen/Snowmass Open Halfpipe and sixth in the 2006 U.S. Open. Philippi has been in several industry films such as Long Story Short, by Level 1 Productions.

New! Chas Waters: Waters, known for his slopestyle abilities placed first in the 2006 Breckenridge Spring Massive Slopestyle event, fifth in the 2004 X-Games Qualifier Slopestyle and was in Worland Warriors III by Shades of Grey Productions.

Clay Bryant: Bryant has previously competed in invite only events such as the Gravity Games and the Orage Masters. Bryant has appeared in Worland Warriors III by Shades of Grey Productions and has been featured in Skiing Magazine.

Chris Hawks: Hawks, a 1999 X-Games gold medalist, has appeared in Further by Teton Gravity Research, many major publications and several Warren Miller films. Hawks runs High Country Freeride, where he is a coach to local children, which include members of the Breckenridge JV Freeride Team. Hawks’ secret talent: He’s a licensed plumber in the state of Colorado.

Paul Cotter: Cotter has appeared in Propaganda by Poor Boyz Productions, Warren Miller’s Impact and Warren Miller’s Journey. Cotter is credited with being the first person to do a back flip onto a rail.

Fritz VanDeMark: VanDeMark placed tenth in the 2004 U.S. Freeskiing Open Superpipe and first in the American Freeski Tour. VanDeMark has been in several industry publications and films. VanDeMark’s secret talent: He did gymnastics for 13 years.

Josh Tostado: Tostado took eighth place in the 2004 X-Games Qualifier Slopestyle and fifth place at the 2004 Spring Massive Slopestyle. Has appeared in Warren Miller’s Journey, and many industry publications. Tostado’s secret talent: He can cook and he is an outstanding endurance mountain biker.

Adam Delorme: Delorme took first place in the 2005 Breckenridge Spring Massive Rail Jam C-box and Lincoln Log, and second place in the Spring Massive Down Rail. Delorme appeared in Worland Warriors III by Shades of Grey Productions.

Justin Allen: Allen placed first in Breckenridge’s Spring Massive Slopestyle event and fourth in Spring Massive’s Superpipe.

Grant Savidge: This is Savidge’s first year on the Breck Freeride Team as an amateur; he had previously been on the JV team where he was a true standout. Savidge placed second at the 2006 Left Over Yam and Rail Jam and sixth at the 2006 Breckenridge Spring Massive Halfpipe. Savidge’s secret talent: He can ride a unicycle.

New! Colby Adams: Adams placed third in the USASA Nationals Pipe, Slopestyle and Freeskiing Invitational, and appeared in Finished, by Unfinished Productions. Adam’s secret talent: She can play the alto saxophone.

Breckenridge JV Freeride Team Members

The JV team represents Breckenridge’s hottest “up-and-comers” in skiing, snowboarding and telemarking, who are 16 and under. JV team members, are given the opportunity to participate in photo shoots and competitions alongside the Pro-Am team, giving them a taste of sponsorship. With the support of Breckenridge and the older team riders, the JV team creates a solid foundation to help young athletes build their careers. The JV team is comprised of telemark all-star Jozy Gessner, Duncan Adams, Zach Black, Cullen Moran, Mike Campbell, Flynt Doyal and Paul McSparin.
