Brewery hosts a tribute to Hunter S. Thompson’s life

Daily Staff Report

BOULDER The Flying Dog Brewery is partnering with The Boulder Theater to present: “A Tribute to Gonzo: A Celebration of the life of Hunter S. Thompson” Friday at 8 p.m. This event will honor and celebrate the life of one of the most eclectic and revered personalities in recent history. The Flying Dog Brewery started in Aspen back in 1990. There are many urban legends surrounding this infamous brewery, but the one with the most credibility goes as follows:”It was a warm summers night in Woody Creek, Flying Dog founder George Stranahan and the gonzo duo of Ralph Steadman and Hunter S. Thompson were engaged in a meeting of minds so to speak. Yes, yes, they were getting drunk, the kind of drunk you save for once a year, pink elephant drunk, or if you will, Flying Dog drunk. What happened next was a kind of collective hallucination and the fearless trio conjured up an image of The Road Dog,” said marketers at Flying Dog. Road Dog Porter later became the first Flying Dog beer to be illustrated by Ralph Steadman. Doctor Hunter penned the beer with the words, “Good People Drink Good Beer.” Thanks to this meeting of the minds, Flying Dog was propelled forward on its irreverent path, never once looking back to face the Sausage Creature. The evening will feature a screening of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” along with additional bonus television, video and film footage of the good doctor. Curtis Robinson, co-publisher of the Mountain Gazette and member of the infamous Monday-Night-Football-At-Hunter’s-House Club, will be on hand to answer questions on the life and times of Hunter S. Thompson. Flying Dog will also be announcing the launch of a tribute beer. There will be specials on Flying Dog Beer and plenty of Chivas Regal on hand. The night will be filled with Gonzo-esque shenanigans. There will be a Hunter S. Thompson Look-A-Like contest, accompanied with several outrageous giveaways over the course of the night. Prizes include: Free Flying Dog Beer for a year to the best Hunter S. Thompson look-alike, a case of Road Dog Porter featuring the original label with notes by Hunter, Wild Dog Double Pale Ale signed by Ralph Steadman, a Boulder Theater movie pass for a year, Boulder Theater movie tickets and more.A partial amount of the proceeds will go to benefit The Hunter S. Thompson Foundation. Admission is $7 and the event is for ages 21 and over.Tickets are also available at All tickets are subject to tax and service charge.Vail Colorado
