AVON ” Caroline Bradford, the longtime director of the environmental group, Eagle River Watershed Council, has been given the Founder’s Stewardship Award from the Gore Range Natural Science School and Alpine Bank.

The award recognizes local residents for their efforts in environmental education.

Bradford got invovled in environmental activism while working in marketing during the 1990s, she said.

“I started encouraging journalists I was hosting to include the ‘leave no trace’ ethic in their stories of the glories of hiking in the Rocky Mountain summers,” she said.

The watershed council sponsors the annual highway and river cleanups, has led efforts to reduce the damage down by highway traction sand to the Black Gore Creek on Vail Pass and worked on projects to help the Eagle River recover from mining pollution.

Bradford also was involved in the creation of the Gore Range science school.

“Decisions with multi-faceted environmental consequences need more of us to be engaged in the conversation,” she said. “I feel deeply about the responsibility to engage more of our community’s brightest minds in these issues critical to our future.”
