Briefs: Cops target construction theft

AVON – Backhoes, tools, refrigerators and piping are among the items regularly stolen from construction job sites. The result is $1 billion in losses annually nationwide, adding about 1 to 2 percent to the cost of a new home, according to the National Association of Home BuildersThe Avon Police Department is holding a meeting for local contractors who are concerned about theft from their construction sites. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m., Thursday in the Avon Town Council Chambers located inside town hall at 400 Benchmark Road.Police will talk about a recent wave of thefts in an effort to help contractors prevent theft.
