Briefs: Redesigning east Avon

AVON Residents and business owners at a town meeting Thursday can give their opinion on a plan to redesign east Avon.The town will share its ideas for the Town Center East Avon District Plan at the meeting, which from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday in the council chambers at Town Hall. Town Center East is the area east of Avon Road between the railroad tracks, Village at Avon, and Interstate 70. The design includes plans for traffic, land use, views and parking, as well as goals and policies for the area. AVON Historian Ron Sladek will give a lecture and slide presentation on Avons Nottingham Power Plant at 2 p.m., Sunday at the Avon library. Sladek and his firm, Tatanka Associates, have been restoring the water wheel built by a ranching family on the north bank of the Eagle River near Hurd Lane. The power plant was added to the State Register of Historic Properties in November 2006 the only property in Avon with that designation.The plant was designed and built in 1928 by Avon ranchers W.E. and Myrtle Nottingham to power their ranch. The small plant generated enough electricity that the Nottinghams were also able to supply power to the nearby Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Depot. The Battle Mountain High School Student Council will host a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation Feb. 3 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Beaver Creek Ice Skating Rink and Game Room.Fifty percent of the profits will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Colorado. Ice skating will cost $5 for kids and $10 for adults. The price includes skate rental and admission.The game room will be open for anyone 10 years or older with games costing 25 cents. Food and drinks will be served by the Battle Mountain Student Council.
