BEAVER CREEK – More than 500 Eagle County students will be in the audience at the Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) this morning for the first performance in the 2011-12 STARS (Supporting The Arts Reaching Students) Series. The VSTARS series begins today and continues through April.

Through the STARS series, the Vilar Center provides free transportation and tickets to more than 5,000 Eagle County students, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, to expose them to live performing arts. The 2011-12 STARS series is underwritten by Pat and Pete Frechette.

The STARS program, which launched nine years ago, promotes artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students through in-school workshops and a variety of music, dance and theater performances at the venue.

Teachers are provided with study guides in advance of each STARS show, which provide suggestions and ways to prepare students for each performance, as well as follow-up activities and discussion questions. A variety of themes are explored including diversity, bullying, creativity, African culture and trust.

Although the majority of audience members for STARS performances are local students, the VPAC sells a limited number of tickets to each performance to the general public for $14 for adults and $11 for children. Tickets are available for purchase online at or by calling the VPAC box office.
