BEAVER CREEK – Folk rocker Jackie Greene, whose debut album “Gone Wanderin'” was voted one of Rolling Stone Magazine Critics’ Top Albums, will play the Vilar Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Greene’s new release, “I Will Never Let You Go,” is included on the soundtrack for the Academy Award nominated film “Brokeback Mountain.” Being chosen for a movie soundtrack, especially an Oscar nominated movie, usually sets an artist on the fast track to stardom. Past examples include Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be” on “Cinderella Story” and Alison Kraus’s rendition of “Down To the River to Pray” on the much-tooted “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” When DIG Music owner Marty DeAnda happened into a local Sacramento, Calif., folk pub’s Monday hoot night, he was not expecting to hear anything impressive. But he did. Greene, a scrawny young kid with a big old-soul voice, guitar chops and plenty of musical confidence, stepped up to the mike and made all conversations in the room cease immediately.

Greene had blown into Sacramento only months earlier from a tiny California gold rush town, sounding like a displaced Delta boy, picked up by dust-bowl winds and set down in northern California. Greene’s debut album was called “Promising roots rock?” by Rolling Stone Magazine. Touring with Jewel and Susan Tedeschi, this singer/songwriter’s smooth voice and soulful vocals have garnered rave reviews around the country. A self-taught musician, Greene is strikingly unself-conscious. His voice is big and casually seductive in the way that Bob Dylan and Tom Waits are, and like his heroes, Dylan and Waits, Greene lives comfortable in his jeans and pork pie hat.Tickets to Greene at the Vilar Center are $35.
