Brothers arrested for ‘camping’ on rooftop in downtown Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Police are used to finding encampments set up by local transients under bridges, in wooded areas, in caves and along the river. But the discovery last week that two brothers were camped out on the roof of a downtown Glenwood restaurant was a new one.

Officers on patrol around 1:15 a.m. Aug. 27 noticed someone wearing a sweatshirt on the roof of Juicy Lucy’s, at 308 Seventh St., and borrowed a ladder from a neighboring business to climb up and check it out.

There, they contacted brothers Jason Clifford Malpass, 33, and Kevin Michael Malpass, 32, who had allegedly built a camp using pieces of cardboard.

“Usually when we find someone on a roof it’s more along the lines of breaking and entering,” Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson said. “I can’t remember ever having a camping incident on the top of a roof.”

The Malpass brothers were arrested and charged with trespass, illegal camping and littering. They were lodged at the Garfield County Jail.
