Keeping the tradition alive

It is a long-standing tradition for Red Sandstone Elementary School fourth graders to go to Mesa Verde National Park and the Great Sand Dunes. Proceeds from Friday night’s fundraiser at Shakedown Bar will help fund the trip.

“In May, the week-long camping trip culminates our study of Colorado History and the Ancestral Puebloans,” said Kristine Chalk, a fourth grade teacher at Red Sandstone. We are so lucky to have archaeological sites that have preserved ancient civilizations right here in the state of Colorado, but many Coloradans never make it to South Western Colorado to see them.”

After reading about the life and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans and the formation of the Sand Dunes, students’ knowledge comes alive with the opportunity to explore the ruins, hike past petroglyphs and bound down the sand dunes, Chalk said. This field trip is one that fourth graders look forward to from the time they’re in kindergarten and remember for the rest of their lives.

Fourth grade parents Terry Armistead, Kara Woods and Amy Parliament helped to organize tonight’s fundraiser.

“(We) wanted to do something fun and unique for a fundraiser this year,” Armistead said. “Selling wrapping paper can be effective but this way the adults get to have fun. Red Sandstone, even though it resides in Vail proper, has a diverse economic population and fundraising is the only way to have programs like the Mesa Verde class trip.”
