Build A Better Birdhouse comp is back

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado Get out the hammer, recycled scraps, and creative juices, the 2008 Build A Better Birdhouse Competition is under way. The competition challenges participants to use recycled materials, green elements, creativity and craftsmanship to build a better birdhouse. The birdhouses will be auctioned at the Healthy Homes Fair, with proceeds benefiting the Vail Symposium and Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability and habitats benefiting birds across the Valley and across the state.The third-annual Healthy Home Tour & Fair is Aug. 16 at Nottingham Park in Avon. The purpose of the event is to showcase green homes, products and lifestyles for the local community. Participants will be able to tour local homes in Eagle County and meet homeowners, builders and designers, as well as visit the family-friendly Healthy Homes Fair at the park that will be filled with demonstrations and displays. The free Healthy Homes Fair has been getting bigger, better and greener every year. In addition to pride and fame, birdhouse makers will have the chance to win prizes. The grand prize for the adult category is a two-night stay at Sky Hotel in Aspen, including dinner for two. For kids (17 and under), the variety of prizes includes bungee/climbing in Beaver Creek, Pazzos Pizza and Marble Slab Ice Cream. Entries will be judged on creativity, workmanship, functionality and use of green elements. Local celebrity judges will include Brian Sipes, Jim Morter and Markian Feduschak. Prizes will be awarded to the winning birdhouses at the 2008 Healthy Homes Fair in Nottingham Park on Aug. 16. I just love this event, says Karen Morter of Morter Architects, the sponsor of the 2008 Birdhouse Competition. I am excited to think about the flocks of people coming to admire our creative and artistic community. As an empty nester, I just get so excited to think of the little bird peeps snuggled away in their green houses.All entries for the 2008 Build A Better Birdhouse competition are due Aug. 4 to Morter Architects in West Vail. The birdhouses will be on display for the community from Aug. 10-15 at Loaded Joes in Avon, with a special reception on Aug. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Birdhouse Reception will coincide with the Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainabilitys Green Drinks night. A limited number of pre-fab birdhouse kits are available for free.
