Build-A-Scarecrow Day returns to Vail Library Saturday

Daily staff report
VAIL CO, Colorado

VAIL – The town of Vail Library sponsors Build-A-Scarecrow Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, in the community room of the Vail Library. Children can form teams or work independently. Families are encouraged to build a scarecrow together. Participants are welcome to bring their own clothes and accessories to personalize their scarecrows or to use those that are supplied. Adults are welcome to try their hand, even if they aren’t with a child.

Vail Mayor Dick Cleveland and local art teacher Maren Schwartz will judge the scarecrows. Judging takes place at a later date. There are many categories of awards, such as scariest, most humorous and most personality, for example. Every scarecrow will be awarded. All participant teams receive a gift upon registration.

“Build-a-scarecrow day is a way to bring the families into the Library to enjoy themselves on an autumn afternoon” said Town Librarian, Lori A. Barnes. “It is not often that families get a chance to be a team with one another. We hope this event will encourage bonding among the teams as they create the unique characters that will decorate the library for fall.”

New this year is an invitation to the local art galleries to display one of these works of art during this season. Vail art galleries are also welcome to form teams to create their own scarecrow.

“We’ve been gathering old discarded jeans and long sleeve shirts from town of Vail employees for the Build-a-Scarecrow Day. The Eagle Valley Rummage Sale and the Thrifty Shoppe of Edwards are generously donating items, as well,” said Cricket Pylman, of the library. “Those items will be returned to the Thrifty Shoppe and the Rummage Sale after they serve as part of a scarecrow, so this is a sort of recycling effort, as well as an art event.”

“The Scarecrows will decorate the library through mid November, sometimes as imposing characters, sometimes comical, but always impressive to visitors and regulars who come into the library,” Barnes said.

Build-a-Scarecrow Day is a free event. Canned food donations will be accepted for the Salvation Army Food Bank.
