Burro race comes to Minturn Saturday

MINTURN, Colorado – The first annual Minturn Park Burro Race is Saturday.

The 4.5-mile race, which begins at 10 a.m. near the Minturn Saloon, is part of the 2012 race schedule of the Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation.

It is the first burro race in Eagle County since the early 1980s, organizers say.

Each competitor races with a burro, attached to them with a rope. Each burro is required to carry a pack saddle full of prospector’s paraphernalia, including a pick, shovel and a gold pan. No riding – the runner may only push, pull, drag or carry the burro.

Other races in this summer’s series have been in Georgetown, Idaho Springs, Fairplay, Leadville and Buena Vista.
