EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado Enrollment for the Vail Performing Arts Academys summer show, The Pirates of Penzance, Junior, will take place now through April, said Annah Scully, the academys executive producer.Children eight through 18 are eligible to enroll in the show, which is set for Aug. 14 – 16 at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.Pirates promises to be different from past shows, academy artistic director Colin Meiring said.Weve always done bubble gum Disney shows not always but in the past three or four years, he said. This is really a challenging production. Its a classic. The dialogue is different. There are some words maybe the kids wont understand. The music is operatic. It will be a really good educational experience. The cost of enrollment will appear on the Vail Performing Arts Academys Web site next week, Scully said. Once students enroll, they receive information about the May auditions. Scully said every student who enrolls in the academy will score a part in the musical. Rehearsals begin July 20, and will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion. Scully said she plans additional rehearsals for the week leading up to the show. Up to 70 children can sign up for the show, Scully said.Pirates of Penzance, Junior follows an English boy who gets mixed in with a group of pirates, Meiring said. The boy attempts to escape the pirates. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a generals daughter whom he meets on a beach.Scully said the show has a solid mix of male and female roles. Its something so different from all of the standard plays that weve been doing, she said. It captures that Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean excitement within a really cute play.High Life Writer Sarah Mausolf can be reached at 970-748-2938 or smausolf@vaildaily.com.
