Camp Hale memorialset for Monday
Past and present will meet atop Tennessee Pass for an hour on Memorial Day during ceremonies honoring members of the 10th Mountain Division lost in World War II and in the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. It’s the 46th time the service has been held at the Camp Hale Memorial. The 10th Mountain Division trained at Camp Hale before shipping off for combat in Italy.Speaker and guest of honor during the hour-long will be Col. Kevin Wilkerson, who recently returned from the active duty in the Middle East. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch at the Ski Cooper lodge.”It will be a full military memorial ceremony,” said Earl Clarke, who was a member of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II.
Because of the closure of U.S. Highway 24 at the Red Cliff bridge, if you’re planning on attending the ceremony, you’ll need to drive over Vail Pass, take Highway 91 to Leadville then head north on Highway 24.There will be one noticeable difference in the ceremony. The F-16 fighter wing that typically makes a “fly-over” of the ceremonies won’t be there. It deployed to Iraq earlier this week.Cliff Thompson can be reached via e-mail at: email@example.com or by calling 949-0555 ext. 450.
