Can Do Multiple Sclerosis hosts restaurant fundraiser on Sunday

EDWARDS — Can Do Day is an annual campaign which honors Can Do Multiple Sclerosis’ founder and Olympic medalist skier, Jimmie Heuga, on his birthday, Sept. 22.

On this day, Can Do MS supporters focus on what they can do and then do it to inspire others and help raise awareness about multiple sclerosis. New this year, local restaurants are teaming up with Can Do MS to support A Can Do Day of Giving.

On Sunday, a variety of local restaurants will show what they can do by donating a percentage of their profits to Can Do MS to support its lifestyle empowerment programs. Restaurant owners hope the program will bring in new customers and give their regulars another reason to dine out while supporting a good cause.

Participating restaurants include Crazy Mountain Brewery, Gore Range Brewery, Larkspur, Main Street Grill, The Rose, Terra Bistro, Yama Sushi and Yeti’s Grind.

Beginning of Can Do MS

“Can Do MS was founded in the Vail Valley 29 years ago by Jimmie Heuga, a pioneer in the MS care management field who was diagnosed with MS in 1970. Jimmie’s drive and commitment to bringing a better quality of life to others like him led to the creation of what was then the Jimmie Heuga Center for MS,” said Heidi A. Heltzel, president and CEO for Can Do MS. “In addition to helping fulfill our mission, we’re excited about partnering with area restaurants in an effort to engage the whole community in celebrating the ongoing success of Jimmie’s vision.”

At the time of his diagnosis, Heuga was advised to avoid physical activity to preserve his health. Being a high-caliber athlete and rebelling against his prescribed sedentary lifestyle, Heuga began developing his own program of exercise and his condition improved. He not only realized the power of exercise, nutrition, positive thinking and movement to enhance his life with MS, more importantly, he realized that by focusing on what he could do rather than what he could not, he was able to go beyond perceived limitations to live his best life with MS.
