Cancer fund-raiser set for Thursday at Vail bar
Bill Sutphen and Vail Valley Medical Center Foundation will host a fund-raiser for the Jon Efraimson Cancer Support Fund of the Shaw Regional Cancer Center from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday at Bogart’s Bar & Bistro in Vail. In February of 2003 Sutphen’s close friend, local producer John Efraimson, died of cancer. The experience inspired Sutphen, Efraimson’s wife, Lisa, and friend Margie Plath to support future beneficiaries of the fund created in his name. Their goal is to provide financial assistance for the daily living needs of patients undergoing treatment at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Edwards. The financial support reduces the stress of maintaining daily routines during treatment, allowing patients to focus on battling the cancer. The first of two annual events held to raise money for this fund is Sutphen’s participation in Ride the Rockies, an annual bicycle tour sponsored by Coors. Sutphen for the second time has committed to join 2,000 cyclists on a six-day ride through the Rocky Mountains. The 431 mile race from Boulder to Copper Mountain began Sunday and ends Friday. “It’s been hard race so far but nothing compared to what those fighting cancer face on a daily basis,” Sutphen said from the road Tuesday. “I just want to make their fight a little easier to win.”A $10 donation is requested at Thursday’s reception in Vail Village at Bogart’s Bar & Grill, which is located at 143 E. Meadow Drive. For more information on Shaw Regional Cancer Center, call (970) 569-7429 or visit http://www.vvmc.com.
