Candidate has degree from Harvard Extension School

VAIL ” Water board candidate Mike Mathias, in a story in Friday’s Vail Daily, said he has a government policy degree from Harvard.

Mathias got a master’s degree from the Harvard Extension School, he said Friday.

Harvard Extension School offers open-enrollment continuing education and is part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University.

“The Extension School is distinguished by its program of open admission, part-time study, evening courses and low tuition,” the Harvard Extension School’s Web site says.

The Harvard Extension School Academic Services office verified Friday that Mathias received a Master of Liberal Arts degree with a concentration in social sciences with government in 1990.

To be admitted for a master’s degree at the extension school, you must have an accredited bachelor’s degree.

“You have to have some background,” Mathias said.

Mathias said it wasn’t misleading to voters that he didn’t specify that he graduated from the open-enrollment division.

The Eagle River Water and Sanitation Board’s board of directors election is Tuesday. Mathias is one of 11 candidates for five open spots.
