AVON ” A woman died of natural causes Saturday at the scene of a head-on collision in the 700 block of Swift Gulch Road, Avon police said.

The passenger of the car, Donna Dunwoodie, 68, of Las Vegas, died as a result of unspecified natural causes. County Coroner Kara Bettis could not be reached for comment.

The woman had emphysema, other medical problems and breathed with the help of an oxygen tank, said daughter Rikki Moore of Leadville.

Dunwoodie was visiting Moore, the driver of the car, according to police reports. On the way to see Moore’s daughter in Buffalo Ridge Apartments, a van pulled in front of Moore’s car and the two vehicles crashed at 10 mph, Officer Paul Arnold said.

The passenger side airbag deployed.

Dunwoodie’s breathing was shallow and told Moore twice she could not breathe before she became unresponsive, Moore said. She added that Dunwoodie’s eyes got big and Moore knew her mother had died.

Paramedics could not find Dunwoodie’s pulse when they arrived at the scene, reports show. Moore taken to the Vail Valley Medical Center where she was treated for back pain.
