Cardiologist to speak at lecture series Wednesday

EDWARDS — Dr. Larry Gaul will be the highlighted speaker at this month’s installment of Vail Integrative Medical Group’s “Live It” free lecture series sponsored by Dogma Athletica. Gaul’s presentation, titled “Sports Physicals: Why a cardiologist cares,” will cover the importance of sports physicals for young athletes and beyond, especially those living at altitude.
Gaul has spent much time abroad reviewing and conducting research associated with sports physicals and heart screenings in other countries, where many times they are mandatory before entering into any formalized sports program.
Gaul began his mountain journey as a dishwasher at the old Whistle Stop Restaurant in Minturn. After working as a paramedic and emergency medical technician in Vail, Gaul decided he wanted to get to know his patients on a deeper level and spend more time with them. He went back to medical school and returned to Vail in 1993 as a board certified cardiologist where he remains as the only full-time cardiologist in the community.
A deep appreciation for the intelligence and activity level of his patients is matched by Gaul’s own love for outdoor sports, including running and skiing. His passion and expertise in heart-related sports medicine led to his role as the head team physician for the U.S. Nordic Ski Team. Gaul is currently the medical director of the Cardiac ICU and Avanti Cardiology at Vail Valley Medical Center.
Larry Gaul will be presenting Wednesday at 6 p.m., followed by a Q&A session.
