Eagle County, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY ” An Eagle County, Colorado deputy is recovering at home after narrowly surviving a collision on Interstate 70 Tuesday night.
Deputy Brad Porter was helping a motorist pull off to the right shoulder around 11:30 p.m. when an oncoming car hit the back of Porter’s patrol car. The impact catapulted Porter’s car into the eastbound lane of the interstate into oncoming traffic, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Porter was treated and released from the hospital, but hasn’t returned to work yet.
The person who hit Porter clearly violated the state’s Move Over Law, which requires motorists to slow down and merge to the lane furthest from an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. According to the release, 49 police officers died in 2007 as a result of car accidents and, like Porter, 12 were struck by cars.
