Catch the Cali-funk vibe at Vail’s Samana
Vail CO, Colorado
VAIL, Colorado ” San Francisco based DJ Laird will spin his psychedelic space funk, otherwise known as funky house and breaks, at Samana Lounge in Vail at 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday show is $5 and Sunday’s show is free.
Laird grew up in Chicago, immersed in the original house music scene of the late ’80s and spending his time buying records to DJ warehouse and renegade parties. In 1990 Laird, a classically trained pianist, moved to San Francisco and became involved with the West Coast rave scene.
It’s been two years since Laird played at Samana Lounge during a four-night gig where each night “was rockin’,” Blick said.
Vail Daily: How (and when) did you get your start in the industry?
DJ Laird: In 1990 I moved to San Francisco, and within a few weeks was helping organize, promote and then DJ events.
VD: Why should people come see your show?
DJL: The most fun you’ll have this month!
VD: How do you differ from the other DJs out there?
DJL: If you listen to it, everyone has their own voice. Underlying everything I do is … the funk. Along with badass bass. If you wanna dance and get down, then we’re in the right place together. And I have a deep depth of musical knowledge across the board and appreciate many different styles.
VD: How do you plan on impacting the future of electronic music?
DJL: With a BANG! My charisma and style is so rhythmic, I’m like the finest wine all up in the place. Spreading the love wherever I go … call me “The Great White Pimp.”
