Idania Noemi Martinez

Larkin Smith

School: Vail Christian High School

Favorite school moment from any year: Spending a week in Hawaii for Academic Decathlon Nationals in Honolulu. In addition to actually competing and taking tests, we spent hours “studying” on the beach, snorkeling in reefs, and bonding while wandering around downtown.

Summer plans: Living in Chicago with my older sister and best friend to take classes with the iO Summer Improvisation Intensive for five weeks.

Where you’re headed this fall: The University of Chicago

If you’re leaving Eagle County, what will you miss most: I’ll miss the comfort and safety of Eagle County. I’ll miss walking into any store or restaurant and always seeing a friendly, familiar face, the waiters knowing my name and usual order, and being able to be completely carefree, without a need to be on my guard, when walking down the streets.

In 10 years you’ll be: In ten years, I will hopefully be well on my way to a career in either public health policy or environmental policy, affiliated with either a branch of the United Nations, the CDC, some other governmental organization, or a non-profit.

Favorite class you took: AP Language and Composition

Class you wish had been offered: AP Studio Art 2D

Anything else? At UChicago, I’ll most likely be majoring in Public Policy and minoring in Human Rights. Also, my best friend, Stuart McDonald, is going to the same college as me!

Anything else?

I want to say thank you to my oldest sister, Savanna, for always believing me and pushing me forward when I needed the push, and helping me become the woman I am today. Also a big thank you to my Gran, Mom, and Dad for never trying to change who I am, and helping me realize thank it is okay to be unique. And finally to my boyfriend, Kris, and my horse, King, for teaching me that no matter what I can never give up, always start what you finish, and to always follow and pursue my dreams.
