Census: Colorado tax collections up 4.4 percent in ’08

DENVER, Colorado” The U.S. Census Bureau says Colorado collected $9.6 billion in state taxes in 2008, up 4.4 percent from the year before.
A Census report released Monday said Colorado collected $5.6 billion in income taxes last year, $3.5 billion in sales and gross receipt taxes, $377 million in licenses and $151 million in severance taxes.
The remainder came from death and gift taxes.
In 2007, the state collected $5.3 billion in income taxes, $3.5 billion in sales and gross receipts taxes, $354 million in licenses, $137 million in severance taxes and $602,000 in death and gift taxes.
Colorado ranked 25th in the nation in total state taxes collected in both 2007 and 2008.
California was first in both years and South Dakota was last in both.
