Census doing ‘detective’ work in western Colorado

DENVER – Census takers are in the midst of their second round of counting, and if it’s anything like the first one, their job will require more than simply knocking on doors.

Census workers on Colorado’s Western Slope delivered about 250,000 forms to homes that only have post office boxes in the area and are now following up at the places where there was no response. Census workers are returning to about 142,000 homes in western Colorado, where resort towns lag behind the state participation rate of 70 percent so far.

Census officials say they expect the participation rate to increase along the Western Slope once they rule out the residences that are vacation homes, a task one worker compared to “being like a detective.”
