Chance of snow for Vail’s bonus ski days
VAIL – Vail Mountain has been buried under almost three feet of snow since Sunday, and could get another foot or so by the time the lifts officially close for the second time this season on Sunday.
“The next storm arrives just before sunrise Saturday morning and about 4-8 inches could fall Saturday morning through evening,” said Joel Gratz, a meteorologist with opensnow.com.
Sunday will be warmer and drier, then another storm is forecast to roll through on Monday.
After that one, we should see drier and warmer weather later next week, Gratz said.
Vail Mountain has received almost three feet of snow since its official closing day last Sunday. Conditions are so good that the ski company’s Powers That Be decided to go skiing, and invite the rest of us to ski as well.
“This is a great way to end our 50th anniversary season,” said Chris Jarnot, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Vail Mountain. “This is an opportunity for our season pass holders and skiers from around the region to take advantage of a few extra days, and enjoy more of the spring skiing we all love here in Colorado.”
Vail got about eight inches of snow from Wednesday’s storm. Parts of the valley got two feet.
Look for snow to start again Friday night and Saturday morning as the jet stream carries in another storm from the northwest and Canada, Gratz said. We can expect up to eight inches, maybe more.
“As we’ve seen all season, northwest flow usually produces more powder than the models predict,” Gratz said.
Snow should wind down Saturday afternoon and evening, Gratz said.
By Tuesday, winter should begin to give way to spring and the weather should get warmer and drier.
Most years, the snowpack continues to accumulate until April 25, next Thursday, then begins to melt and skiers begin to hit the rivers in kayaks and rafts.
