Hope it holds

Mr. Rogers: Your commentary Dec. 17 regarding John Horan-Kates’ efforts to bring values education to the students of Eagle County schools is thought-provoking.

Twenty-five years ago, as a consultant to the Shawnee Mission School District in suburban Kansas City, I worked with a counselor, Peggy Cundiff, to implement a similar project, Values Clarification, for students.

The effort was approved by the school board and all principals. When the curriculum was integrated into district programs the outcry from parents was deafening. The district quickly dumped the project. I hope this effort within our district gets traction and takes root

An anonymous philosopher once said, “An ethical person knows he shouldn’t steal, a moral person won’t!” More recently, Thomas Sewell, a Senior Fellow at Stanford University wrote, “Have you ever known a time when there is so much talk about ethics ” and so little practice of it.”
