Chefs Jose Andres and Nobu Matsuhisa join forces in Vail restaurant for two nights

VAIL — Chefs Jose Andres and Nobu Matsuhisa will create a diverse and collaborative seven-course menu offered to guests at Matsuhisa Vail for two nights, Jan. 4 and 5. The event is open to the public for $250 per guest, and reservations are available both evenings between 5 and 10 p.m. To make reservations and purchase tickets, contact Matsuhisa Vail at 970-476-6628.

Matsuhisa Vail, located within Solaris in Vail Village, was created by chef Nobu Matsuhisa and is one of five in the world; other locations include Beverly Hills, Athens, Mykonos and Aspen. Matsuhisa serves sushi and sashimi, as well as specialty entrees, and offers extensive wine, sake and cocktail lists.

The collaboration of these two celebrity chefs, Andres originally from Spain and Matsuhisa originally from Japan, is especially timely as both countries are currently celebrating the 400th anniversary of official bilateral relations between Spain and Japan.

Named Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 2011 and recognized by Time magazine on the “Time 100” list of most influential people in the world, Andres is a culinary innovator, passionate advocate for food and hunger issues, author, television personality and chef-owner of ThinkFoodGroup. TFG is the team responsible for renowned dining concepts in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. These include minibar by Jose Andres; Zaytinya; Oyamel; Jaleo; and China Poblano at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas; The Bazaar by Jose Andres at the SLS Hotel Beverly Hills and South Beach; and Mi Casa at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico. Matsuhisa is a celebrity chef and restaurateur known for his fusion cuisine, blending traditional Japanese dishes with South American (Peruvian) ingredients. In June 2009, Matsuhisa was presented with an award from the Japan Society for his achievements in food culture. Four of his restaurants have received Michelin stars. Born in Saitama, Japan, after Matsuhisa graduated from high school, he worked at the restaurant Matsue Sushi in Shinjuku, Tokyo, for seven years and was invited by a regular customer who was a Peruvian entrepreneur of Japanese descent to open a Japanese restaurant in Peru. In 1973, at age 24, he moved to Lima and opened a restaurant, also named Matsuei, in partnership with his sponsor. Nobu was unable to find many of the ingredients he took for granted in Japan and had to improvise, and it was here that he developed his unique style of cuisine, incorporating Peruvian ingredients into Japanese dishes. Today, Matsuhisa is responsible for two restaurant brands, which encompass 25 restaurants, his family-owned Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills and Matsuhisa Vail, Aspen, Athens and Mykonos Greece.
