Child care, skate park to open in Edwards

EDWARDS – Get ready to see dirt moving around again at Berry Creek. As winter winds down, construction on a child care facility and a skate park will resume in April. The skate park should be finished by August, said Jason Hasenberg, the county’s facilities management director. There’s no opening date set for the Miller Ranch Child Care facility.

A community center, which will occupy the second floor of the child care building, should be open before January 2006, said Kathleen Forinash, the county’s health and human services director. The community room will be available for rent by Eagle County residents and organizations. The architecture for the child care building will resemble the overall Miller Ranch theme with a combination of heavy timber and copper accents, horizontal wood siding and stucco, county officials said. Child care at Miller Ranch will likely cost upwards of $30 a day with slightly higher fees for younger children, Forinash said. This is on par with the average cost of care in the county, she said. The facility will accommodate 80 children on the main level of the structure. A 4,500-square-foot community center with a large conference/community room and office space will be on the upper level. The Miller Ranch Housing homeowner association will have an office on the second floor. The 20,000-square-foot skate park will include a “streetscape” area consisting of ramps and rails and a “bowl” area that would simulate skating in an empty-pool. There also will be a small memorial in the park for the late snowboarder Josh Malay.

The skate park will cost a little more than $1 million. The child care facility will cost about $1.5 million.
