COLORADO ” The “Over the River” project now has an estimated pricetag: $50 million to cover segments of the Arkansas River with a luminous fabric in 2012, at the earliest.

The cost was revealed today by the project engineer for artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude during a press conference.

Vince Davenport said it was the first firm estimate for the project’s cost because he had submitted to their engineering consultants new plans for the bases of frames to hold the swaths of fabric on the river’s banks. The changed concept would call for almost twice as much drilling, he said.

The artists are working with the Bureau of Land Management to receive a permit for the project. Project director Jonita Davenport said the plan was to send out requests for qualifications and a scope of work document by the end of the month in order begin the process of selecting a contractor to assemble an environmental impact statement for “Over the River.”
