Special to the Daily/ Wolfgang VolzChristo poses with his late wife, Jeanne-Claude. Christo will speak in Vail on July 19.

VAIL – The Vail Symposium announced this week that internationally acclaimed artist Christo will speak at its Summer 2011 Arts-in-Education Lecture July 19. The event will take place at 5 p.m. at The Lodge at Vail. All valley residents and visitors are welcome to attend the event. Christo will speak about he and his late wife/artistic partner Jeanne-Claude’s 40-year collaborative history of creating public works of art across the globe.

The program will also offer the community an opportunity to learn more about Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s much publicized Over The River project, which is proposed for an August 2014 exhibition. The project involves suspending a total of 5.9 miles of silvery luminous fabric panels high above a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River between Salida and Canon City. Christo and Jeanne-Claude selected this site for its aesthetic merits and technical viability after traveling 14,000 miles and inspecting 89 rivers in the Rocky Mountains. Over The River is currently undergoing an environmental impact statement process with a final decision expected from the Bureau of Land Management late this summer.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s works of art that have been highly documented include The Gates in Central Park, 1979-2005; Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971-1995; Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Miami, 1980-1983; and Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, Calif., 1972-1976, to name a few. They have never accepted any subsidies, royalties, grants or sponsorships of any kind for their temporary works of art, and Christo has no plans to do so for future projects. All of the artists’ income is derived from the sale of original works by Christo to private collectors, galleries and museums.

The Symposium program will begin with a welcome reception at 5 p.m. and Christo will speak at 5:30 p.m. Following his comprehensive talk about his body of work and artistic process, there will be an interactive audience discussion.

This Arts-in-Education Lecture by Christo continues the Symposium’s 40-year tradition of bringing world renowned speakers to the Valley to provide thought-provoking, diverse and affordable educational programs. Christo is donating his presentation as a gift to the Symposium.
