VAIL — Vacant retail space in Vail is usually rented pretty quickly. In West Vail, Christy Sports now occupies the spot that until recently was home to a Sports Authority store.
That store, on the west end of the West Vail Mall, closed down in the summer of this year, along with the rest of the chain’s locations.
Christy Sports has been working to renovate and move into the space for the past several weeks. Store general manager Jay Restrepo said the store has been open — quietly — for the past week or so. A grand opening is still in the works, and Restrepo said the store space is set to be remodeled after the ski season.
That remodeling work will expand the store’s retail offerings, Restrepo said. For now, though, the store is in the business Christy Sports knows well — ski equipment sales and rentals.
To draw customers this winter, the store will offer a basic gear rental package for $24.95 per day. People who reserve their gear in advance will receive a 20 percent discount.
Restrepo said the West Vail store has a big advantage compared to the company’s existing Bridge Street location.
“This location is a drive-up,” Restrepo said. “If someone rented in Vail Village and forgot to drop off a piece of gear, they can do it here.”
Through this winter, Restrepo said the store expects to operate with a staff of 12 or 13 people. There are positions available.
That staff may double by the time the 2017-’18 ski season starts.
