Cocktails & Canvas comes to The Westin in Avon on Sunday night
AVON — Alpine Arts Center and the town of Avon are partnering to offer a new monthly social art series for the community. The kick-off event is a Cocktails & Canvas class Sunday from 6:30 to 9 p.m., located at The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa. The class will be instructed by Alpine Arts Center owner Lauren Merrill and sponsored by the town of Avon, for a discounted price of $20 per person. The evening includes all painting materials and step-by-step instruction, and cocktails can be purchased at the bar throughout the event for anyone 21 and older.
Participants will be led through an acrylic painting on stretched canvas of a snowy mountain scene with rustic ski signs. Additionally, people are welcome to incorporate their own unique styles and personalize their pieces; at the end of the night, everyone will have a finished masterpiece to take home.
‘CHOICES ARE ENDLESS’
Merrill says Sunday night’s class and the specific painting is one of her favorites to teach.
“I love seeing people’s creativity come through in this painting,” Merrill said. “For example, we’ve had every phrase you can imagine painted on the sign posts from favorite mountains such as Beaver Creek, Vail and Breckenridge to more abstract destinations like ‘Lost Love,’ ‘Adventure’ and ‘Namaste.’ The choices are endless, and absolutely no experience is necessary.”
These new monthly art events are made possible by the Avon Town Council’s award of grant funding to Alpine Arts Center, according to Merrill.
“We are thankful for their support and are thrilled about this new partnership between Alpine Arts Center and the town of Avon,” she said.
Mayor Pro Tem Jake Wolf sees the social arts series as an important and exciting step in introducing the teaching of art in Avon.
“The Town Council will be actively pursuing the formation of a Creative Arts District this next year in our town core,” he said. “Lauren’s community grant application fit the goals of nurturing a rich and diverse arts center here in a timely manner. We are excited to have her launch this monthly program in 2015.”
In addition to monthly events held in Avon this year, Alpine Arts Center offers classes, events, vacation art camps and drop-in activities at its Edwards location.
