Colo man erases Facebook data after threat of suit
BOULDER, Colo. – A Colorado entrepreneur has destroyed a database that showed regional patterns among Facebook users after the social networking site accused him of misusing the information and threatened to sue.
Pete Warden of Boulder says he planned to share the information on more than 200 million Facebook users with researchers. Facebook says Warden gathered the data without permission, violating the site’s rules.
Warden says he starting compiling the data while developing a search engine for his startup company, Mailana. He discussed it on his blog in February.
In March, he announced he was destroying the data, including his own copy.
Warden says he isn’t convinced that what he did was illegal but says he can’t afford to fight a lawsuit.
