Colo. man fined $30K for poisoning birds
DENVER, Colorado – A Hugo man pleaded guilty Thursday to misapplying an insecticide that led to the death of more than 2,200 birds.
Under a plea agreement, Lyle Ravenkamp agreed to pay the maximum fine of $15,000, give $15,000 in restitution to the Colorado Wildlife Heritage Fund and give up his pesticide applicator’s license, the U.S. Justice Department said.
Ravenkamp pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The department said he admitted applying the insecticide carbofuran to the surface of a 95-acre sunflower field in Lincoln County rather than putting it below ground, allowing mourning doves, horned larks, western meadowlarks, red-winged blackbirds and common grackles to ingest it.
